Laulima Government Solutions is looking for a Physical Science Technician (PST) to support our Navy Drug Screening Laboratory (NDSL) contract at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, FL. The position is located in the Operations Directorate, Initial Testing Department, Accessioning Division.
Processes service member urine specimens for forensic drug testing and maintaining proper chain of custody documentations.
Receives and prepares hand delivered specimens maintaining precise forensic chain of custody requirements.
Opens packages, checks documentation, evaluates, identifies and marks discrepancies; determines what information is missing and if information can be obtained by re-routing. Numerically accessions aliquots of specimens for testing. Checks for specimen adulteration, inserts blind control specimens, validates accessioning process and all associated documentation. Places hold specimens in storage and discards unwanted samples.
Maintains cleanliness of work spaces, equipment and glassware including sweeping and damp mop of the accessioning and screening areas of Initial Testing. Restocks supplies as required. Uses appropriate disposal procedures for waste materials and assists in dumps of biological waste materials.
Complies with NAVOSH and OSHA standards, and all applicable rules, regulations and instructions. Wears personal protective equipment as required by NAVDRUGLABJAXINST 5100.2F. Reports observed workplace hazards, injuries, occupational illnesses, or property damage resulting from accidents to the supervisor.
Maintains certification in areas of responsibility and Complies with certification standards as required by NAVDRUGLABJAXINST 12410.1F.
The PST receives work area assignments from the shift team leader and overall direction from the Accessioning Division supervisor. In general, the PST must work independently or in a cooperative team effort, and match work output rate with that of other workers involved in a continuous production process. Completed assignments will be reviewed and evaluated by the supervisor or other technical reviewer with specific emphasis on completeness, technical soundness, timeliness, and compliance with the standard operating procedure.
Guidelines consist of detailed written technical instruction manuals, equipment operating manuals, and applicable portions of a standardized operating procedure. Some independent judgment must be exercised in applying guidelines to situations such as technical irregularities, atypical findings, decontamination of spills, or special operational equipment problems.
Procedures for the performance of technical work are detailed and complex, involving numerous steps. Analytical precision is essential and absolutely no variation in technical protocol is allowed. Automated instrumentation is highly complex and operational requirements are detailed.
The purpose of this position is to provide skilled technical work involving sample preparation and initial analytical testing for evidence of drugs of abuse. Continuous workflow is essential to accomplishment of the command mission and delays or disruptions have significant impact on the operational forces. Errors in technical performance mandate the repeating of entire batches of tests resulting in substantial production and monetary losses. The effect of an error, which would allow a person to be falsely accused of using drugs of abuse, could be disastrous to the person’s career and reputation.
The position requires physical effort involved in prolonged standing at a laboratory workbench, bending, stooping and reaching; lifting of equipment, supplies, and reagents weighing up to 40 pounds. Extremely close visual attention and intense concentration is required in matching record documentation, sample identification numbers, and testing record numbers.
Bachelor’s Degree in a related field of study preferred.
Must have general knowledge of clinical laboratory operations, procedures and safety requirements.
Must have general knowledge of abused drug screening programs, objectives, policies, and operational procedures with specific emphasis on the legal specimens’ chain of custody requirements, physical security requirements for absolute compliance with standardized operational procedures.
Must also have knowledge of how to prevent illness and/or injury due to potentially infectious biological specimens.
Must be able to recognize equipment malfunctions and be able to make minor adjustments.
Must have knowledge of laboratory record systems and be able to maintain flawless scientific procedural documentation.
Must have skill in providing workbench level training and orientation in techniques, procedures, and safety requirements.
Must have the ability to operate a computer.
Strong organizational skills in managing a wide range of items from schedules, performance reports, security paperwork, and awards.
Ability to use Microsoft suite and Adobe software.
Familiar with standards of Navy Correspondence.
Experience with a military command preferred.
- The PST performs most functions indoors in areas that normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation. The environment provides exposure to potentially infectious biological specimens, and high voltage and high-speed mechanical equipment.
An active DoD Secret Clearance is required.
This position requires the ability to obtain a positive background investigation for access to sensitive privacy information.
This position is subject to random drug testing and must pass an initial drug test.
